Included software could be improved.

Summary:PRO:

The DX2 is lightweight, portable, and is USB powered. The unit has S-Video and RCA/Composite inputs. This is a hardware encoder, so it uses limited computer resources during capture.

Video quality is very good. I did not experience any dropped frames and the audio and video were always in sync. I have captured from DVR, VHS, and Hi-8 video camera. My captures ranged from 2 minutes to 2 hours. I did not experince any heat problems with this device.

Capture formats are MPEG-1, MPEG-2, AVI, DivX (MP4). The supplied Ulead software can also recode (but not capture) to WMV.

CON:

ADS included their own proprietary capture software called CapWiz. This is capture only and has no editing capabilities. The software is functional as a capture utility, but it could be greatly improved.
My major complaints with this software:

1. No editing - I have to open a second program to trim/clean up the beginning and end of my video.
2. The software is full screen and can not be resized. This is annoying, especially since there is wasted space in the program interface.

Ulead Video Studio is also included (version 9 as of May 2006). This software can be used to capture and edit video. This software is decent, and more than adequate for a novice, but better options may be available for advanced users.

The biggest drawback of this device is that you can capture ONLY with the supplied programs. Other programs (Nero, other Ulead products, etc) WILL NOT capture from this device.

Fortunately, once you capture with the supplied software, you can edit or recode with any software of your choice.

OVERALL:

I am very satisfied with this product. The captures are good quality and it doesn\'t put a strain on my computer. It is simple to use and easy to take it with me and connect to my laptop. The only thing that would make this product better would be freedom to use the capture software of my choice and to have basic editing features in the CapWiz software.

Reviewed by: lennya on 02-Sep-06 Rating:

Strengths:Makes video capturing easy. Good capture quality, S-Video input.

Weaknesses:Software good be better.

Summary:Update 8/16/08: After 2 years of usage I still find this device quite useful. I find myself using it to capture from many different sources which I never originally envisioned. Drivers, software (including Vista) and documentation available here:
www.adstech.com/suppor...

I purchased this device to convert about 20 Hi-8 camcorder tapes to DVD. Connection to the PC is very easy since it uses USB 2.0. The device has analog stereo audio inputs and composite (RCA cable) and S-Video video inputs. My camcorder has S-Video outputs so I used that connection for better video quality.

They include two capture programs: CapWiz and Ulead VideoStudio 9 SE DVD. CapWiz, short for Capture Wizard, allows you to capture video from any input source and save it in a variety of file types such as MPEG-2 (DVD) and MPEG-4 (DivX). CapWiz has a fair amount of configuration options but its basic job is to capture video and it does that quite well. I connected my camcorder, started the video tape, pressed RECORD in CapWiz and came back 2 hours later to stop the capture. You can also set it to stop after a predefined amount of time. After that you can use the Ulead software to create DVDs menus, capture, edit, etc. Once all that\'s complete the Ulead software will process your video file and create the files necessary to burn a DVD. That final processing can be a lengthy process. It took over 90 minutes for 2 hours of video on a Athlon 64 3800+ computer with 2 GB of RAM.

CapWiz also has a \'Direct to Disk\' feature which allows you to capture and burn to DVD in one step. You can also set it to create chapters at preset intervals as well. This is the fastest way to convert video tapes to DVD if you don\'t mind having only a very basic menu on the DVD. You could for example create a 2 hour DVD in the same time it would normally take to only capture the video and you save all the extra authoring time. I tested this a few times and decided not to use it for my home video conversion project because the DVDs it produced would not work on my Samsung DVD/VHS combo player. The DVDs worked fine on my other Apex DVD/VHS combo player. This might be a limitation in my Samsung DVD player and not the software, I never could figure out which. So instead I used Capwiz to capture the video and then Ulead to create the menus, chapters, etc.

The Ulead software has a wide variety of features and functions too numerous to go into in this review. Basically it allows you edit video files, create menus & chapters and burn to DVD or CD.

The only real complaint I have with the software is that it only supports creating DVDs with MPEG or PCM audio. I would have preferred something more standard like AC3 (Dolby Digital) so the DVDs would play back through my home theater receiver over its coaxial digital audio connection in the same way real movie DVDs do. I suspect most people have their DVDs connected to their TVs using normal RCA cable analog connections in which case they won\'t have any issue with the audio formats like I did.

In summary, this device produces good quality captures in common video file formats. Most people will find the included software adequate to produce good looking DVDs of their home videos.

Reviewed by: pamjohn16 on 12-Apr-06 Rating:

Strengths:Have used both DVD and VCR to transfer onto DVD for others and myself. The good reviews and $20 rebate were the main reasons I decided to go with the DX2 and I am pleased with my purchase.

The ability to get the archive process going and not have to babysit it for the full two hour procedure is nice.

I may resell the DX2 once all our tapes are converted now that we have a DV camcorder.
