It safeguards equipment from damaging surges and spikes. I have all computer equipment powered on 24/7, UPS software automatically powers down computer system in the event of an extended power outage. It doesn\'t cost a lot, and saves me from headaches! <br /> <br /> Service has also been flawless. <br />This unit arrived with the defective UPS to PC simple signaling cable ($32 retail price). <br /> Emailed about this problem to APC Customer Solutions Team and got response in a couple hours, with apologies and information that new cable is on the way. <br /> <br /> I have an older version of the APC Back-UPS RS for more then 3 years and it has been completely reliable, performing flawlessly when needed. Because of my personal experience I bought UPS for a second office from the same company. <br /> Working with customer service or tech support has been a very pleasurable experience. The device connects via a provided USB cable. The operating system quits like it\'s supposed to, but all other applications are \"force quit\", and no modified documents are saved.<br /><br /><br />------The UPS arrives with the battery disconnected. Connecting the battery was not a problem, but getting the battery and cord back inside the unit was very difficult because the cord is quite stiff and must fit in a narrow space. <br /> <br /><br />------Installation was simple. Just connect the USB cord to your computer. You don\'t even need to install PowerChute because Mac OS X will automatically recognize the UPS. When I plugged it in, a little lightning bolt showed up in the Apple bar. The UPS tab on the Energy Saver control panel gives you 3 options: <br /><br /> -shutdown the computer after it has been on UPS power for a given length of time <br /> -shutdown the computer after when the time left on UPS power has dropped to a given length of time <br /> -shutdown the computer after when the UPS power level has dropped to a given amount <br /> The PowerChute control panel only gives you the first two options, so it really is quite useless. <br /> <br /> <br /> ------The UPS has AVR. There is no coax connection, so it cannot protect a cable modem or router from lightning on the cable line. Comes with a phone cord and ethernet cable. <br /> <br /> <br /> ------There are a total of seven outlets, arranged into two columns on the back of the UPS. I wish the plugs were more easily accessible. It is quite awkward for me to plug or unplug something without turning the unit around, which I can\'t do because it\'s constrained by the cords that are already plugged in. The left column of four outlets has battery backup, and the right column of three outlets just has surge protection. The outlets on the bottom of each column are spaced further out to accommodate a larger transformer-type plug. In other words, you can\'t have more than one big plug on battery backup. I have VOIP, and in order to keep the phone operational during a power outage, I would need to have the cable modem, router, Vonage adapter and phone plugged in. Three out of the four have a transformer in the plug, so that wouldn\'t work. Besides that, there wouldn\'t be a plug left for my computer. <br /> <br /> <br /> ------The default is for the UPS to beep four times every 30 seconds when it\'s running on battery power. If you\'re at home, you\'d usually know if the power went out, so it\'s not really necessary. And if the power goes out while you\'re sleeping, then it\'s just annoying because the you have to get up, turn off the computer, and then turn off the UPS to get it to stop. And you may as well get up because your open documents aren\'t going to be saved otherwise. Apparently the only way to turn off the beep permanently is through the PowerChute software for Windows. If you don\'t have Windows, then you\'re out of luck.<br /><br /> ------I bought this UPS because I was annoyed with power outages every other month. You really should have voltage regulation on any sensitive equipment.  Years ago I sold computers and we\'d get people coming in with power damaged modems and computers, but many don\'t realize that often these problems are not from surges, rather from under or over voltage.  I\'ve had experience with other companies\' UPSes and I would only go with APC.  We\'ve had Belkin and Tripp Lite units fail miserably.  My biggest complaint is limited support for OS X.
