So decided to take a look at a BW printer.  Got this for $90 dollars at newegg.com.  Like I said above the installation was easy...not sure why others had problems.  I did use the network cable as part of the process which was recommended in the guide.  I have installed on Windows XP SP3 and Vista with no problems.  The quality and speed have been great.  Have not had issues with noise since it is not in our main living area since it is wireless it can go anywhere.  I highly suggest this. Connected VIA ethernet cable to my Airport Extreme wireless router, the wireless Macbook was very easy to run print setup on (5mins). Running the Auto seek setup on my Dell desktop XP Home machine was a bit more troublesome and this comp is connected directly to the mac router. I had to manually print out the IP address of the printer and type it in during network print setup. I like that the paper cassette is a closed draw -- I\'ve had drums scratched from dirt accumulation on the paper with a different model printer. Price is highly variable -- I got mine for about $70 with coupons. The driver is neither provided by the Linux distro nor BROTHER; however the generic PCL6 driver provided with the distro does the work and the installation was straight forward. <br /> The printing is really fast even in wireless mode. Once done, it\'s wire free and reliable operation.<br /><br />Output is laser quality and fast.  Printer driver is well laid-out to control various aspects of printing.  Further fine-tune is possible via the web access using IE.  The only miss is the somewhat weak manual paper feeding, which results in restarting the printer from time to time. It did manage to jam once after printing about 150 pages continuously.  The printer sells the toner separate from the drums--so buying toner for this printer is cheaper than other laser printers. <br />  <br /> It took me a while to set up the wireless because you had to first connect the printer to the router.  I don\'t know what the problem was, but the printer ethernet port didn\'t work directly when I connected it to my Verizon DSL router.  The ethernet indicator light just flickered instead of staying green. I have been wanting a nice laser for a while but buying one back then was a bit pricey for me given a light duty cycle.  Decided to go with this Brother because the price offer was great, their name has lasted for years and quality products do have a long life span, and free shipping from an online retailer.  The output was as expected but noticed on the first ~10 copies that a couple dashed lines appeared to the left edge of the paper.  Cleaned the drum using the self-cleaning tab and shook the toner as instructed.  It still appeared but with each passing print, it went away.  After that \"break-in\" period, no more dashes and output is perfect.  A minor thing but went away; all is fine now.
